Developing and Implementing WebQuests

Overview

According to WebQuest creator Bernie Dodge, “A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which some or all of the information that learners interact with comes from resources on the Internet.”   Key points about WebQuest curriculum projects are:

  • Internet-based classroom activity

  • Follows a specific structure

  • Student-centered

  • Teacher-designed

  • Web sites are pre-selected

  •  Inquiry-based—it is literally a “quest”

  • Cooperative learning: students are grouped

  • Utilizes higher-order thinking skills

There are five basic components of an average WebQuest

Introduction

  • sets the stage for the activity.
  • catches the reader's attention to draw them into the quest.
  • provides background information.

Task

  • states what the students will be required to do.
  • prevents surprises down the road.
  • details what products will be expected and the tools that are to be used to produce them.

Process

  • concise and clearly laid out.
  • provides links to Internet sites interwoven within the steps.

Evaluation

  • displays a rubric to measure the product as objectively as possible
  • leaves little room for question

Conclusion

  • summarizes the experience
  • allows reflection about the process.
  • adds higher level questions that may be researched at another time.
  • Gives food for thought as to where students can go with the info they have learned, using it in a different situation.

 

Additionally, good WebQuests include:

Teacher Page

  • Gives instructions to the teacher that expand on some of the student instructions.
  • Includes introduction, description of learners, standards addressed, more on evaluation, and a conclusion.

Credits

  • Credits all sources of graphics, sound files, etc. and any people that helped with the project.
